IP and Building MMOs

Online games, particularly MMOs, have been the subject of increasing litigation in recent years. The increased litigation combined with rising production budgets and revenues reaffirms the need for a solid IP strategy before launch of a title. This planning includes securing the standard IP rights as early as possible in development. The structure of an IP portfolio and the common types of IP violations are different and perhaps more complicated with online games compared to single-player games or traditional passive entertainment. This talk will generally discuss protecting IP in online games. The talk will include discussions of IP portfolio planning in the online game industry and hypothetical problems extracted from real-world disputes.
